Pro Planning Tips For Autumnal Weddings

If you are reading this, you presumably already know the benefits of an autumnal wedding and maybe even have a date locked down. However, for anyone not enlightened, here are just a handful of the reasons why weddings at this time of year can be so great -

  • Higher likelihood that your friends will be available

  • Higher venue availability

  • Beautiful Autumnal colours

  • Budget often goes further

  • Darker evenings = populated dancefloor

  • Fireworks/sparklers

With so many considerable benefits, autumnal weddings need their own celebratory blog post, but that is for another time!

From working so closely with couples at countless autumnal weddings, I know what can make all the difference on the day. Here is what I have learnt -

GET UMBRELLAS

First, check with your venue as they may have their own. Otherwise, even if the forecast looks good, just grab a couple. Umbrellas can be a lifesaver when it comes to getting some nice couple photos in the drizzle, plus you don’t know when else in the day they may come in handy! The clear umbrellas are ideal as they don’t cast shadows so are great for pictures.

Footwear

White bridal shoes may not be so white after time outside during the autumn months so consider having a less important pair of shoes to go out for photographs. Alternatively, there is no law saying bridal shoes have to be white, in fact some of the coolest bridal shoes I see are in direct violation of this tradition!

Layer Up

Know that it is very likely to be cold. While grooms and groomsmen nearly always come equipped with blazers and waistcoats, brides and bridesmaids are unlikely to have such warm luxuries! The good news is, this is an opportunity to make the look your own. Think dresses with sleeves, shawls, or maybe fluffy coats? My personal favourite look is denim/leather jackets!

Think About Your Guests

It is absolutely your day and you should plan it how you want it. But before you decide to hold the whole day outside, put yourself in the shoes of your guests. If you have a planned a portion of the day outside, offering a basket full of shawls and a table hot drinks goes a long way.

Embrace It!

Autumn is full of beautiful colours and festivities, think halloween/Guy Fawkes. Why not lean in?

Planning For Photos

Autumnal and winter sunsets can be incredible. Depending on when they are though, they can clash with speeches. You can google when the sunset is at your venue’s location and try to avoid speeches being half an hour either side of this time.
